“Urban Mini-Forest” Pilot Project
Feb 14, 2025

To build a low-carbon society, the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) has collaborated with the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects (HKILA) on 14 February 2025 to launch the "Urban Mini-Forest" pilot project in the Fanling North New Development Area. The concept, originating from Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves mimicking the structure of natural forests by densely planting diverse native species in smaller land areas. This approach enhances greenery coverage and helps alleviate the urban heat island effect.

During the event, the project team invited special guests, including Mr. Michael Fong, JP, the Director of CEDD, and Mr. Paul Chan, the President of HKILA, to plant saplings of the “mini-forest.” This collaboration not only marks a significant milestone in CEDD's greening efforts but also sets the stage for incorporating urban mini-forests as a sustainable development goal in future infrastructure projects. CEDD will continue its efforts in promoting conservation and building an environmentally sustainable community.
